Among the arid desert and jutting rock landscape of Joshua Tree National Park is something clearly out of place —a strange building made of large white shipping containers. The building was designed by architect James Whitaker and is actually better described as a shipping container home, complete with three ensuite bedrooms, a kitchen, and a living room.
Whitaker said in a press release provided to Definition.org that each container is “oriented to maximize views across the landscape or to use the topography to provide privacy, depending on their individual use.” Despite the home’s remote location, Whitaker decided to add in a garage that doubles as a power source with its solar panel roof.
The home was designed for a client of Whitaker’s, a film producer “with a background in nurturing creative projects into fruition,” or as Whitaker described them, the “dream collaborator” for an artist.
Now, Whitaker Studio has provided an in-depth look of the home, both the pristine, white exterior and the exquisite interior. Take a tour of this one-of-a-kind marvel below.
