Swords are definitely some of the coolest weapons to have existed throughout history. Nowadays, we don’t use swords other than for reasons other than their intended use (killing someone), such as display or treasures to cherish from history. Luckily, we are able to still see some of the most legendary swords of all time. Here are just a few:
The Sword and the Stone
There is an ancient story about the sword and the stone that has been long believed to be a myth. The original story has been proven to be fiction, but there was real-life inspiration for the tale coming from Italy.
What actually happened, was that two men were arguing about one giving up his sinful habits. He claimed that it would be as hard as thrusting a sword through a stone. He wanted to demonstrate, but when he did attempt to thrust his sword in the stone, it actually went in! He was shocked, thinking it would have just broken. Hopefully, he was able to give up his sinful habits!
Muramasa’s Cursed Swords
These Muramasa cursed blades came from the swordsmith Muramasa Sengo. His hope was that when he was creating a sword, it would become a “prodigious destroyer.” The legend with why these swords were cursed was that if the sword wielder was not satisfied with the way that his combat went, he would go mad. This madness would then lead to suicide or murder.
There have been plenty of legends surrounding these swords stating that those who used them eventually did become mad and would either be murdered or commit suicide.
The Wallace Sword
The Wallace sword is the sword that belonged to William Wallace. If you’ve seen Braveheart or are just a big Mel Gibson fan, then you know that William Wallace was the main character in the movie. It was believed that the covering belt and hilt of the sword were actually made from human flesh! The skin was supposedly the flesh of Hugh de Cressingham, someone that Wallace had once defeated in battle.
The Sword of Goujian
The sword of Goujian was one of the most mysterious discoveries when archaeologists found it in a tomb in China. The sword is dated to be around 2,000 years old and was engraved with various words. The strangest part about this discovery was just how immaculate the sword was. It was so sharp and still pristine that one archaeologist actually cut himself when he just barely touched the sword! There also wasn’t one bit of rust on the entire blade, and the engravings were still crystal clear. Apparently, whoever built the sword was capable of including non-rusting chemicals that allowed the sword to stay in such pristine condition for so long.
The 7-Branched Sword
The seven-branched sword is definitely one of the most extraordinary swords on the list. Unfortunately, it wasn’t found in such an amazingly pristine condition like the sword of Goujian had been found in. Instead, it was in a rather rusty condition. However, archaeologists were still able to make out some of the words that had been inscribed on the blade. Apparently, the sword had been a gift from a Korean king to a Japanese monarch.
