‘Tis the season for all things creepy and haunted, and an abandoned asylum is no exception. Decay and desertion can make a place scary, but the feeling that someone just stopped what they were doing, picked up, and left one day is what amplifies the eeriness. The following photos from Dutch photographer Vacant Photography of this deserted mental hospital in the Netherlands show just what “abandonment” means.
Seeing the pictures is one thing, but would you walk through a place like this?
This room is definitely due for a paint job … and a mop job, and a dusting. If you look to the left of the photo, you’ll see a few plastic bowling pins. It seems as if the player stopped mid-game, unless they’re still lurking around, waiting for someone to join.
Ever see Chucky or Annabelle? If so, then you know how creepy dolls can be. Stuffed in the sink, … what kind of game do you think their owner was playing?
Newspapers strewn about, a crucifix against the window, and a coat left hanging on the wall appear to be some personal touches to an otherwise bland, empty room. Kudos to whoever occupied this space, it looks like they stayed up to date on current news. And if that crucifix doesn’t bring back memories of The Exorcist, I’d second-guess whether you actually watched the horror film. Maybe you’re a hide-behind-the-pillow kind of person.
No place like a mental hospital to get your creativity flowing! Here it looks as if someone had been writing something on a typewriter, leaving it unfinished and foregoing a second draft.
The outside of an abandoned mental hospital can look either enticing or scary, depending on what you’re into. The disheveled landscape surrounding this deteriorating building makes it the perfect setting for a terrifying trip.
We all love a room with a view. Whoever lived here had the right idea, having their wheelchair in front of a window. However, it also could’ve led to feelings of being trapped. The saying “you can look, but you can’t touch” comes to mind. Imagine being stuck behind these walls, seeing the outside world, and not being able to enter it.
So what do these pictures mean for you? Maybe they bring your fears to light or inspire you to visit an abandoned place nearby. Either way, there’s a story — many stories even — within the walls. Are you brave enough to find out?
