This mining town looks ripped out of the legends of the Wild West, but it is completely uninhabitable due to radiation. Sounds like a location from the “Fallout” video game franchise, but it’s actually quite real.
This unnamed mining town in Arizona used to be brimming with life. But now, it is completely abandoned. Unfortunately, the people that lived there were not warned about the horrifically harmful effects of radiation. As a result, sickness and disease spread throughout the town and rendered the area around it completely useless. Today, all that remains are the old structures and of course, the radiation left behind from the mining.
Arizona has a long history in the mining industry. A number of different minerals have been mined there over the years, but the minerals we are looking at today are uranium and asbestos. Uranium mining has taken place in Arizona for nearly 100 years now. In fact, the mining town featured in this article sat right beside a uranium mine.
On the other side of the town was an asbestos mine. While asbestos has since been shown to be cancer-causing and terrible for humans to be in contact with, the miners in the early 20th century were often not warned about the potential health risks associated with the mines.
These mines employed most of the people living in the town. As a result, a large portion of the populace were in direct or indirect contact with these harmful minerals on a daily basis.
The employers or the government didn’t think to alert these individuals that working unprotected with the radiation could be deadly. Because of this, countless miners and even some of their family members died from radiation poisoning. Finally, the mines were closed down in the 1980s, but the damage had already been done, both to the people and the environment.
Many experts believe that the contamination of the area is irreversible. This area will be permanently uninhabitable for people or animals for decades, even centuries, to come.
Despite the fact that human beings could never live there, a few brave souls still decided to check it out. Individuals from the popular YouTube channel “TheUnknownCameraman” ventured deep into the irradiated area to provide us with a look at what life was like for the people who used to live there.
They went through abandoned buildings and deep into the mining caves. They also encountered some things left behind from the miners.
While hearing about what happened here is interesting, seeing it is a whole ‘nother ball game. Check out the video below to see some explorers take a closer look at this abandoned town. Also, that YouTube channel features a number of other cool urban exploration videos that you should definitely check out!
While it looks like a very cool place, do not go there. Radiation levels there are still very high and these individuals took a huge risk when they decided to check it out. They did it so you don’t have to (and hopefully they brought a radiation suit or two along with them).
