Teenager Born Without a Jaw Becomes a Rapper With a Little Bit of Help and a Whole Lot of Heart
Isaiah Acosta was born without a jaw, which cost him the ability to speak, eat, and sing. He didn’t let his affliction deprive him of his desire to become a rapper, though, and the 18-year-old has miraculously seen his dream become a reality.
The Phoenix native collaborates with an artist named Trap House, who raps Acosta’s lyrics. They perform together onstage — Trap House rapping and Acosta signing as he dances — and have formed a close bond as their relationship has developed. Acosta communicates to Trap House via text message.
“We were talking a little earlier, and I definitely agree with you that you should always rise to be able to do what you want, and never let the opinions of others hold you back from achieving your goals,” Trap House told Acosta in a video uploaded by Upworthy.
Calling themselves Isaiah & Trap, their first song was called “Oxygen to Fly,” and the lyrics are extremely powerful. Here’s a small sample of his words.
I don’t care what people think of me
Proud and honored they carry me
Jaw gone but I love myself, like a lion to my family
Heart big through a tragedy
I don’t care what the people say
I don’t ever say can’t or won’t, had a dream to rap the other day
Just accept me for my differences
Everybody gonna hear my voice
