A great group or phylum of extinct plants, probably all Paleozoic, having the outward appearance of the Pteridophyta, but bearing seeds instead of macrospores, nearly equivalent to the Cycadofilices, but broader in its scope, including those resembling calamites and lepidophytes as well as ferns. It embraces three classes, the Pteridospermæ, the Calamospermæ, and the Lepidospermæ (which see).
