When a policewoman was involved in a tragic accident, doctors broke the devastating news that she would never walk again. Nicki Donnelly, however, wasn’t a quitter and thanks to advanced technology, an innovative exoskeleton gave her the chance to walk again. Now, this “Robocop woman” is inspiring millions with her story of triumph.

Donnelly’s story began with tragedy. In 2009, she was hit head-on by a reckless driver while on duty. The crash crushed her pelvis, but the injury didn’t seem catastrophic initially. She was discharged from the hospital that same day, though told she would need intensive brain and spinal cord rehabilitation. But in 2011, a “delayed spinal cord break” occurred, according to the Daily Mail. Paralysis would slowly overcome her body from the chest down.

Donnelly would spend the next year in the hospital feeling her “bones slowly crumbling away,” she told Daily Mail. Donnelly was ready to give up until on her daughter’s fifth birthday, the youngster asked for just one thing: She wanted her mom to walk again.

“From that day, whenever things were bad, I’d try to remember what she said and remind myself that I was doing it for her,” recalled Donnelly.

From that day on, Donnelly was determined to make her daughter’s wish come true. That’s when U.S.-based ReWalk was finally able to get in touch with Donnelly. Through a generous donation, Donnelly was given a pair of ReWalk Robotics 6.0 Personal System Exoskeleton. The robotic legs, they said, could allow Donnelly to walk again in two years.

Donnelly was walking again within seven weeks.

Donnelly’s story has inspired millions across the globe. She became a motivational speaker, an ambassador for disabled people, she’s modeled, and even been named “Mrs. British Empire” and received the “Pride of Britain” award.
