the things we leave unfinished summary

When I picked up The Things We Leave Unfinished, I wasn’t sure what to anticipate. A historical fiction enthusiast, I was intrigued by the idea of past and present intertwined into one love story. More so, the cover was singing to me with a promise of a beautiful, deep story. Besides, I had heard a whole ton of buzz online for this book, which only heightened my curiosity.

From the start, it was an enjoyable experience to get lost in the book. The interweaving of timelines, the characters’ depths, and blending romance with resilience left the book engaging and hard to put down. But I should add, trust me, it is the last part of the book where the real charm lies.

A plethora of expression, exhilarating surprises, and sheer thought-provoking spirit that lingers have to admit, there was a unique experience in reading this novel. It was more than just good reading; it carefully took an informal look at love, resilience, and the allure of things left unfinished. So let’s take this exciting journey together.

The Things We Leave Unfinished Summary

The Things We Leave Unfinished is, in its essence, a dual timeline narrative—the cadence of love and heartbreak, of discovery and endurance, is projected onto a canvas of courage to begin once again.

In present-day, we meet 28-year-old Georgia Stanton, a young woman in the process of putting her life together again after a messy divorce, back in Colorado in her childhood home, settled in the estate of her late great-grandmother, Scarlett Stanton, the famous romance novelist. It is here that she meets author Noah Harrison, the writer of best-selling romances. Georgia finds herself in direct conflict with him-him being the one to finish Scarlett’s last novel, the one she left unfinished.

Back into World War II we are again, as Georgia and Noah pore over Scarlett’s unfinished manuscript, based on her romance with World War II pilot Jameson Stanton. As they continue to read Scarlett’s words and letters, they uncover a tragic love story that Scarlett forged.

Georgia confronts her cynicism toward love through Scarlett’s life. Noah copes with the conflict of his career aspirations versus his burgeoning feelings for Georgia, demonstrating respect for how Scarlett lived her life. Scarlett and Jameson’s tragic love story brings Georgia and Noah’s relationship increasingly alive, resonant with tension, longing, and an undeniable attraction.

The Things We Leave Unfinished Review

The Things We Leave Unfinished tells a poignant story, the present and past interwoven in the deep, complex tale of love, its sacrifices, its scars, and the courage to confront inevitable endings and embrace new beginnings. It also sums up those risks we run for love, deep wounds that don’t mend easily, and conclusions we wrestle with. It tells a story that mixes old mistakes with lessons learned, balancing between hope and despair for future happiness. It will discuss how the things we leave unfinished only tell us who we are; how we come to complete them is what will define our legacy.

First, the dual timelines are engrossing. Woven in and out between the present day and the World War II era, this one keeps you at the edge of your seat. I’m really impressed by how the author made both timelines become equally compelling feat, if I do say so! I’m torn between longing to stay in one timeline and looking forward to returning to the other.

Now, let’s discuss our characters. They come off as each heavy with personality depths. The experiences are constructed in such a way that it feels like one is with them right now. Their romances sometimes create moments that make your heart swell, and some moments of anticipation that touch a nerve.

Set during World War II, the love story of Scarlett Wright and Jameson Stanton is not merely one of bravery, sacrifice, and passion, but also an alarming narration soaked in peril and uncertainty. The life of Jameson is never safe as he simply flies his missions, which casts a shadow of dread on their romantic tale. Scarlett, independent to the core, fights with the terrifying reality of loving someone exposed to such danger.

In present-day, meet Georgia Stanton and Noah Morelli, whose chemistry is off the charts from the get-go. Their love story may be unique, but it’s just as captivating. A slow-burn romance keeps you in suspense, filled with smart banter, simmering emotion, and an immense respect for Georgia’s family history. Noah must win over the very guarded Georgia without stepping over the red line while working on finishing her grandma’s unfinished novel. His patient pursuit becomes a captivating journey of trust and healing, a delicate dance between his professional responsibility and growing affection for Georgia.

The Spoiler

Now, about the ending! I assure you, I did not see that coming at ALL! My mind and heart were blown at once. I can’t even fathom living as another being, let alone losing every person dear to you. None of them has reached old age. Scarlett’s dead. Jameson’s dead. William is dead. And when I say it felt like everyone died in this novel, I am not kidding. Only Ava and Georgia were spared in the Stanton line. Constance lost a lot, some of which were her children. That just totally breaks my heart. It feels like she lived a shell of a life, but then again, that’s just me. The ending reminds me most of Atonement. Similar settings and all, and I just wonder if it’s from here that Rebecca Yarros got the idea for The Things We Left Behind. Well, I guess we shall never know.

All in all, this tragic tale won me over, and I’m sure it’s going to be in my top ten recommended reads for the year. I wouldn’t say that many other books this year have made me feel quite like this did. I would recommend this for any historical romance lovers of romance.
