Threading Care: Before and After Eyebrow Threading
Eyebrow threading is one of the most accurate ways to remove and shape hair, but achieving the best results is more than simply arriving at your appointment. From prep to post-threading, there are small but significant steps that make a big difference in how your skin feels and how your brows heal and look afterward.
Whether you’re a first-timer or just want to enhance your results, here’s all you need to know before and after threading, based on real-world experience from working with all types of clients and skin types.
Before Threading Care: Prepping the Brows and Skin
Let Them Grow Out
Let your eyebrow hair grow for a minimum of 2–4 weeks. The more growth, the better it is to define your natural shape and achieve cleaner results. Don’t pluck, shave, or trim during this period.
Be Clear About the Shape You Want
Have a sense of the brow shape that will work best for your face—arched, soft-angled, straight, etc. If you’re not sure, it’s fine to get your threading expert’s opinion based on your face shape and natural brow line.
Exfoliate Gently (But Not the Day Of)
24 hours prior to your appointment, a light exfoliation is recommended to remove dead skin cells and lift fine hairs for smooth threading. Don’t exfoliate on the day of to avoid irritation.
Steer Clear of Moisturizer and Makeup on the Area
Show up with clean, product-free skin—particularly no oils, foundation, or brow pencil in the area. This makes it easier for the thread to catch on the hair and prevents the skin from breaking out during or after threading.
Time Your Appointment Right
Threading temporarily makes the skin red and, in a few instances, slightly swollen. Book your appointment when you can leave work or attend events makeup-free for the remainder of the day or have no event scheduled directly following.
During the Appointment: What to Expect
- You’ll typically sit with the area around your brows being stretched out loosely to put tension on the skin for successful hair removal.
- You may experience a slight, pinching feeling as the thread pulls the hair out from the follicle. It is not painful but can be felt more if your skin is sensitive or you just don’t enjoy pain.
- For most threading, the session takes 10–20 minutes depending on the degree of shaping to be done.
- Redness, particularly on your first few sessions, is the norm. This usually subsides within an hour or two.
After Threading: How to Care for the Skin
Soothe Immediately
Apply a cold compress or splash with cool water to soothe the skin. Aloe vera gel or alcohol-free witch hazel also assist in relieving redness and calming the area.
Don’t Touch the Area
Your skin is sensitive and recently exfoliated due to the threading. Don’t touch the area with your hands, particularly if they’re not clean.
Skip Makeup for 24 Hours
Let your skin breathe. Foundation or brow products applied immediately may cause breakouts or pores to clog.
Stay Out of the Sun and Heat
Avoid direct sun, tanning beds, steam rooms, and saunas for one day. The skin after threading is more sensitive to irritation and discoloration.
Hold Off on Exfoliating and Active Skincare
Wait 24–48 hours before using any exfoliating scrubs, retinol, AHAs/BHAs, or acne treatments near your brows. These can cause stinging or peeling on freshly threaded skin.
Other Tips from Experience
- If you’re especially sensitive to pain, try threading a few days after your period. Hormonal shifts can make skin more sensitive during your cycle.
- Don’t plan your very first threading appointment close to a major event. Treat yourself to at least one session to observe your skin’s reaction.
- If, after threading, you experience tiny bumps or whiteheads, treat yourself to a small amount of tea tree oil blended with a carrier oil or a fragrance-free, soothing moisturizer.
Eyebrow Threading: How long does it last
It varies how quickly your hair grows, but most people return every 3–5 weeks. Regular threading keeps the shape and thins the regrowth over time. Eventually, you might find you don’t need it as often.
Eyebrow threading may be a quick procedure on the outside, but tiny rituals prior to and following your appointment can entirely transform the result. Skin care, knowledge of your brow shape, and allowing your skin to heal are all included in upholding clean, defined brows that stay put.
