Can TMJ Cause Dizziness – Understand Jaw-Balance

tmj and lightheadedness

“Listening to your jaw could help you find balance—literally.”

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD) is the stealthy underlying culprit behind dizziness, fullness in the ears, and, quite possibly, even nausea; symptoms that confound both the patient and the clinician. Really, if you wake up one morning with seemingly full ears and dizziness, it might be your jaw producing the symptom. So, in the next article, we are going to discuss TMJ, possibly the source of your dizziness, signs and symptoms, and relief.

What is TMJ?

The temporomandibular joints are the hinge joints that link your jaw to your temporal bones of the skull. This enables you to chew, speak, and yawn. Inflammation of the joint, joint dislocation, or overuse of these joints may lead to TMJ disorders and related symptoms.

Incipient ones may be clicking, tension, or tension headache, it might develop into more complex migraines, dizziness, ear pains, or feeling a lack of stability; maybe they were caused by so-called non-related symptoms.

Common Symptoms of TMJ

  • Pain or jaw stiffness
  • Headache or migraine
  • Clicking or jaw popping during Yearly chewing
  • Facial pain or sensitivity
  • Trouble chewing or talking
  • Ear fullness or tinnitus
  • Dizziness or vertigo sensations

Can TMJ Cause Dizziness?

In fact, TMJ is highly likely to induce dizziness, considering the close proximity of the TMJ to the inner ear, the focal point for balance in the body.

The inner ear consists of a vestibular system, which is are tiny structure responsible for calculating movement and position. Swelling, tension, or joint out-of-place of TMJ can drive against the surrounding structures or nerves that disrupt the messages transmitted to the brain concerning balance. The outcome, spinning, swaying, or dizziness.

Research note: Vertigo or dizziness has been described in up to 60% of TMJ patients by some reports. In fact, TMJ patients are more than 2 times more likely to report symptoms of balance than a normal population.

Can TMJ Cause Waking Up with Ear Fullness and Dizziness?

If you wake up in the morning feeling dizzy and having ear fullness, it could be a sign that you are a bruxer (or are otherwise grinding your teeth at night); more specifically, bruxism. With bruxism, there is subconscious muscle tension that squeezes the joint and all of the structures around the jaw. This squeezing could even involve your eustachian tubes – the structures that help regulate ear pressure.

So, if you are thinking, ‘Can TMJ cause waking with ear fullness and dizziness?’ the answer is most definitely, YES! You will feel like your ear is ‘plugged’, much like a feeling that your ear is under water, usually with some accompanying dizziness, your jaws feel tender, or just a slight headache.

What Does TMJ-Related Dizziness Feel Like?

Dizziness from TMJ presents in the following ways:

  • Transitory sensation of spinning (vertigo)
  • Dizziness or loss of balance when walking
  • Nausea or visual symptoms
  • A sense of fullness or blockage in the ear
  • Buzzing or ringing in the ear (tinnitus)
  • Difficulty concentrating, or difficulty concentrating on the symptoms when they occur, during an attack

Such attacks may recur or occur with greater frequency with jaw movement, like chewing or yawning, especially in the morning.

What’s the Cause of TMJ-Induced Dizziness?

There are numerous TMJ mechanisms for dizziness:

  • Misaligned Jaw: The position of the jaw (also referred to as the mandibular condyle) can possibly get in the way of the inner ear.
  • Muscle tension: Muscle overactivity of jaw muscles or clenching can indirectly impact nearby nerves and blood vessels.
  • Eustachian tube dysfunction: Jaw muscle overactivity may be narrowing the Eustachian tubes, extending from the middle ear to the throat. This might result in imbalance or fullness in the ear.

The extremely high level of interconnectedness between the neuro, muscular, and skeletal structures in this region illustrates the way an apparently isolated jaw disorder can lead to completely unrelated symptoms.

How do you know it is TMJ?

The diagnostic process for this disease begins with a thorough clinical evaluation by a doctor-in-absentia and an available dentist:

  • Measuring the movement of the jaw and range
  • Evaluating tenderness, click, or malalignment
  • Imaging studies (X-ray, CT, or MRI) to evaluate joint status
  • Excluding neurological, vestibular, or inner ear disease

Proper diagnosis is important in the management of the cause of dizziness and not the symptoms.

TMJ Dizziness: Preventive Precautions

Management for dizziness due to TMJ is lifestyle modification, some home remedies, and short-term medical management.

Home Remedies

  • Soft Diet: No crunchy or chewable foods; soups, smoothies, steamed vegetables.
  • Jaw Exercises: Stretching and gentle massaging loosen tightness.
  • Good Posture: Good posture diminishes tension on the jaw.
  • Heat or Cold Packing: Relaxed tenseness of muscles is caused by heat, while cold constricts.
  • Stress Management: Deep breathing, sleeping habits, and meditation lessen clenching.

Medications

  • NSAID alternatives such as ibuprofen.
  • Antidepressants or muscle relaxants in extreme circumstances
  • Antihistamines or vestibular inhibitors in vertigo

Professional Therapies

  • Night guards or oral splints to stop grinding at night
  • Jaw and neck alignment physical therapy
  • TENS therapy or acupuncture
  • Botox injections for relaxing muscles
  • Surgical treatment (only in extremely severe cases)

Pro Tip: Always consult a specialist dentist or ENT practitioner before initiating any line of treatment, particularly if symptoms and signs persist or intensify.

When is a Doctor Consultation Required

jaw pain and dizziness

You must consult a health practitioner if you suffer from:

  • Recurring or severe dizziness
  • Ear fullness interfering with sleep or the performance of day-to-day activities
  • Inability to open or close your jaw completely
  • Persistent jaw, face, or neck pain
  • Not improving with home treatment in a few weeks

Acting early can prevent long-term symptoms and greatly improve your quality of life.

Can TMJ cause dizziness? Absolutely. And in the most unpredictable manner. From waking up with the sensation of fullness in either ear to experiencing actual vertigo, TMJ disorders can impair various functions of the body that contribute to balancing. Fortunately, relief is available with the correct diagnosis and treatment regimen
