Before I Let Go Kennedy Ryan Summary and review
Occasionally, a book will just keep surfacing in bookland—on Top Ten Tuesdays, on recommendation posts, or in random mentions—and for some reason, it sticks with you. Such was the experience with Before I Let Go by Kennedy Ryan. I first saw it on one of Candyce’s lists at The Book Dutchesses, and it went right onto my TBR. I’m a lover of highly emotional, character-centric books, so of course my hopes were high. But did it live up to them?
Synopsis of Before I Let Go
- Before I Let Go by Kennedy Ryan
- Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Yasmen and Josiah Wade used to think their love could overcome anything. But life had other ideas, delivering tragedy after tragedy their way until even their strong relationship couldn’t hold up against the burden of grief. Their marriage dissolved, but their bond didn’t. Now sharing two children and operating their restaurant as co-parents, the past and present become indistinguishable. A kiss that was stolen, unresolved feelings, and the “What if? ” question resurface old hurts and new dreams. Can second chances at love exist when all is lost?
Before I Let Go Book Review
As a character romance lover, I approached this book anticipating emotional depth, internal development, and that lingering pain of a love not yet complete. I had heard lots of acclaim, but as this was my first Kennedy Ryan novel, I wasn’t quite sure what to anticipate beyond that. Let’s just say the bar was set high.
Characters & Emotional Depth
Yasmen and Josiah’s union is the beating heart of this novel, and what a heart. Having experienced something unimaginable, they are both left trying to make their way through the rubble in decidedly different manners. Yasmen slipped into a crushing depression, and Josiah lost himself in work, refusing to engage with the emotional devastation on any level. Their marriage did not last, but that bond? It never fully went away.
Two years since they divorced, they’re navigating life as co-parents and partners. But tellingly, it’s obvious the love between them never diminished. Through shifting POVs (something I adore in romance), we’re able to observe the fissures and mending from each side. Seeing this happen via dual POV makes their emotional arcs feel grounded and authentic.
Yasmen’s work reunion sparks a chain of events, re-igniting past flames while challenging them to confront what drove them apart in the beginning. Most notable to me was how wisely Kennedy Ryan illustrated their healing, not merely as people, but as parents, a partner, and a family.
Writing Style of Kennedy Ryan in the Book
Kennedy Ryan’s prose is heartbreaking, emotionally intense, and effortless to become immersed in. The dual POV style provides much-needed depth, particularly considering how differently Yasmen and Josiah deal with loss and grief. Flashbacks work perfectly, gradually stripping away the layers of their past together and revealing to us how they shattered—and how they could heal.
I’ll be honest—the beginning was a bit slow for me. It took a while to get into the emotional rhythm of the story. But once things began to shift—especially around a key parent-teacher meeting—it became impossible to put down. From that moment on, it was a rollercoaster of emotions, growth, and revelations that didn’t let up until the very end.
Though this book is not plot-driven, that’s precisely why it excels. The emphasis remains on emotional journeys, healing, and reconnecting. And even though it explores heavy subjects—grief, trauma, trust, mental health—it never feels too much. Rather, the tone slowly changes toward hope and rebirth, and that gives it a beautiful emotional journey.
Also deserving of mention: yes, there is smut, but not added in for the sake of spice. It’s intimate and significant, closely linked to the characters’ process of healing.
What I felt in the End
Although it started off slowly, Before I Let Go turned out to be a powerfully moving and satisfying read. Yasmen and Josiah’s tale is fraught with pain, hope, learning, and love that refuses to give up even when life insists on knocking it down. The emotional authenticity of their journey and the introspective examination of healing made this shine.Kennedy Ryan is officially on my radar now, and I’m excited to dive into more of her work. I’m especially curious about the second book in the Skyland series, which will center on Soledad—a character who already felt rich with potential in this one.
If you’re attracted to second-chance romances that cut deeper than surface-level angst, and you don’t object to shedding a few tears along the way, Before I Let Go is definitely worth your time.
