About the Book and Screenplay

A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) chronicles the story of 19-year-old Feyre Archeron, a human woman who slays a wolf in the forest to discover it was a faerie. According to an ancient deal, Tamlin brings her into the fae world of Prythian, a strong and afflicted High Fae. With time, Feyre’s perception of the fae changes as she gets involved in their politics, magic, and love. Written in first-person from Feyre’s point of view, the emotion-charged tale meanders through Beauty and the Beast, infused with emotion-rich fae heritage to develop a rich but dangerous world of secrets, yearning, and change.

A Court of Thorns and Roses Recap: Reviews of Chapters 1-23

Chapters 1-4:

Feyre, the third of three sisters, hunts to sustain her impoverished family. She kills a wolf in the forest, unaware that it was fae—and is then caught by a beast who takes her life in return. Instead of death, she is taken into fae society, leaving behind her bitter sisters and broken father. Her survival and duty are made plain, paving the way for her strength and autonomy.

Chapters 5–8:

Feyre wakes up in the Spring Court, and Tamlin, the beast, becomes a golden-haired High Fae. She encounters Lucien, a red-haired snark with a pathetic history, and Alis, a fake maid. Tamlin is kind, but Feyre conspires to escape, tormented by fright and distrust. She discovers the magical blight that afflicts Prythian and curses Tamlin’s court to wear masks.

Chapters 9–12:

Feyre attempts to get Lucien to assist her in escaping, but discovers more about the curse and blight. She hears about a dark “she” and encounters horrific creatures such as the Bogge and puca. Tamlin intervenes each time, and she gradually gets to understand him. She begins to map the estate, sketching as a means of being able to understand it since she cannot read.

Chapters 13–16:

Feyre admits to being illiterate. Tamlin convinces her to write home, and Lucien teaches her how to catch a Suriel—a creature that tells the truth. She catches one and learns she must stay with Tamlin to help break the curse. Tamlin saves her from naga, and Lucien begins to warm up to her. Feyre learns that her family’s memories were altered so they would not harm.

Chapters 17–20:

Feyre sees the Summer Court face brutally killed. She and Tamlin bond since they have had similar experiences in tragedy and converse about previous histories. Tamlin tells of the coldness that exists in his family and the way Feyre retells her story of the destruction of her former wealthy family. She is given a sword by Lucien as a symbol and Tamlin awakens her creative abilities. Trespassing during Calanmai (Fire Night), she almost gets attacked—with the mysterious fae showing up and saving her life with violet eyes.

Chapter 21:

Tamlin recounts the Calanmai ritual, where Tamlin magically has to go and retrieve a woman to finish the Rite. Tamlin admits he attempted to retrieve Feyre but settled on one of another. Tamlin then finds her alone later, presses her against the wall, and tells her he would have been kind. Feyre is disturbed but deeply moved.

Chapter 22:

Feyre wakes up with Tamlin’s bite mark. After a fight, he apologizes in roses. She gets dressed up to dinner and introduces him to her art, including some of her family and the Spring Court. He’s touched, and they draw closer. She volunteers to assist him with the blight, but he asks her only to keep herself safe.

Chapter 23:

Feyre and Tamlin are lying in the grass, having a moment of quiet. Tamlin tells her that he cannot show her the world through fake eyes, because she won’t kiss him. She does, and he kisses her eyelids. When she wakes up, the world is brighter and more colorful. She attempts to pull away his mask, but magic bars her way. Feyre sleeps beside him, feeling happy.
