The television series Sex and the City began airing on Sunday evenings on HBO in 1998. Though it was only on air until 2004, not even making it to a 100th episode, the series was quickly catapulted to cult status. The series was based on the 1997 book of the same name by former New York Observer columnist Candace Bushnell.

Every episode began with columnist Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) ruminating aloud about her experiences with sex and love in the Big Apple. Bradshaw was joined by her three besties; the tight-knit friend circle was inseparable, supporting each other in their various romantic exploits and whatever else life threw at them. Publicist Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) had a no-holds-barred, healthy sexual appetite. Art dealer Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) was a bit more mild-mannered and practical when it came to love and romance. Brainy attorney Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) sought for the same combination of brains and brawn from her partner.

Lovers came and went throughout the series, but their friendships were everlasting. There was the tried-and-true hunky Aidan Shaw (John Corbett) and the elusive Mr. Big (Chris Noth) — Carrie’s on-again, off-again boyfriend who she ultimately married in the movie. Even famed ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov portrayed one of Bradshaw’s love interests. Charlotte had an interesting storyline with first husband Trey MacDougal (Kyle Maclachlan), and Miranda found love and marriage with Steve Brady (David Eigenberg). However, Samantha was always more independent and preferred a challenge; although, she did have a much younger actor boyfriend Jerry “Smith” Jerrod (Jason Lewis) to keep her occupied for a season.
