NASCAR racing was officially formed in the winter of 1948 in Daytona Beach, Florida, the belly of the world land speed records races that had begun in the 1920s and ’30s. Since its inception, NASCAR has evolved into a multi-billion dollar business, sanctioning more than 1,500 races at more than 100 tracks in 39 U.S. states — as well as some races in Canada. Like in most sports, every now and then, greatness emerges. Through NASCAR’s history, there have been dozens who have dominated the sport and could be considered the greatest NASCAR driver. Then, as the years roll on, they pass the mantle to the next star of the motor speedway.
