Definition of "penicillinase" []

  • Any of various enzymes that are produced by certain bacteria, including most strains of staphylococci, and that hydrolyze and inactivate penicillin. They are used in medicine to treat allergic reactions to penicillin. Also called beta-lactamase. (noun)
